Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. North Atlantic Region presents donations totaling $20,000 to two charitable organizations
Sorority members donated to Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc., and GirlTrek
(Baltimore, Md. - April 18, 2022) – Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's North Atlantic Region invite the public to gather for a community “Just BeCause” walk from the Baltimore Convention Center to the city’s famed Inner Harbor on Thursday, April 21 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, April 22 at 6:30 a.m. to present donations to two important charities—the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. (SCDAA) and GirlTrek. The donations are a part of the organization’s service efforts as they gather in person for the first time since the start of the pandemic to celebrate their 91st North Atlantic Regional Conference.
Continuing with the organization’s history of service to their community, members of the region submitted donations to support the two chosen charitable organizations. The donations to the SCDAA are to be earmarked for the patient community served by the organization. The SCDAA provides education, insurance counseling, pharmacy assistance, financial aid, coping skills development, and other supportive services and referrals to its patient community and their families. GirlTrek is the largest public health nonprofit for African American women and girls in the United States. With nearly one million women in the movement, GirlTrek encourages women to use walking as a practical first step to inspire healthy living, families, and communities.
“I could not be prouder of the members of the North Atlantic Region for this incredible donation to these two meaningful charities,” said Mary Bentley LaMar, Regional Director. “Both of these great organizations provide services and resources that support better health and wellness, and as a member of this great sorority, this is part of how we are addressing health disparities that affect our communities.” she added.
More than 5,000 members of the North Atlantic region will be in Baltimore through April 24 as part of the four-day conference.
